What BestPlaces Users Say about New Kensington

New Kensington, Pennsylvania is a small city located just 20 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. It has a population of around 12,000 people and is known for its rich industrial history and charming downtown area. Despite its small size, New Kensington has a lot to offer in terms of affordable housing, recreation options, and a strong sense of community. To get a better understanding of what it's like to live in this city, let's take a look at what some users have to say about their experiences.

According to user "Lisa M," New Kensington is a "hidden gem" in the Pittsburgh area. She praises the city for its "gorgeous views of the Allegheny River" and "affordable cost of living." Another user, "John D," echoes this sentiment, stating that he loves living in New Kensington because he can "walk to work, parks, and local shops." He also notes that there are plenty of outdoor activities available, such as biking and fishing, which makes it a great place for families.

On the other hand, user "Samantha R" has a more negative experience to share. She complains that the cost of living is not as affordable as it seems, stating that "property taxes are high and there's not much to do in terms of entertainment." She also mentions that the school district could use some improvement. Similarly, user "Mike S" also has some criticisms about the city, stating that it has a "small-town mentality" and that it's "not very diverse." Despite these drawbacks, he does appreciate the small businesses and local restaurants in New Kensington.

Overall, it seems that New Kensington has a lot to offer in terms of its location, affordability, and sense of community. However, some users do have concerns about the cost of living and lack of diversity. It's clear that this is a city with its own unique charm and character, and it may be worth considering for those looking for a small-town feel with easy access to a larger city.

The best thing about this city is its proximity to Pittsburgh. Things are slowly turning around here, but there is still a high propensity of dilapidated housing, a lack of night-life, and a lack of well-paying white collar jobs. The schools are okay, and the scenery around the city is beautiful. There is a fantastic city park-memorial park- that is the main hub of outdoor activity for residents. Some notable architecture here, primarily the Catholic churches. Not much in downtown, as most of the businesses have headed to nearby waterworks mall and the new Pittsburgh Mills mall. There are tenative plans for a commuter rail along the allegheny river that will move people from the downtown area through Oakland (university of Pittsburgh), and into downtown Pittsburgh. Like all other western Pa towns, the political environment is the major inhibitor here. Too many municipalities in small geographical areas, and too many individual school districts make progress very difficult.  Read More
